BioSS specialises in the development and application of the quantitative methods needed to enhance scientific knowledge and impact.

Our vision is to improve science & society through an understanding of variation, uncertainty and risk.

Our mission is to develop and apply quantitative methodologies with a rigorous mathematical and statistical basis.

We are recognised internationally for our work at the interface between the mathematically-based sciences and a wide span of applied sciences covering agriculture and the rural economy, the environment, food and health.

Our principal funder is the Scottish Government’s Rural and Environment Science and Analytical Services Division (RESAS).

We are one of the Scottish Environment, Food and Agriculture Research Institutes (SEFARI), working collectively to deliver a portfolio of strategic research and translational activities commissioned by RESAS.

Rothamsted Research

Rothamsted Research logo

Rothamsted Research is a world-leading, non-profit research centre that focuses on strategic agricultural science to the benefit of farmers and society worldwide. Our purpose is to empower society with the best scientific knowledge to produce sufficient nutritious food whilst caring for the environment, and our mission is to undertake cutting-edge agricultural science and innovation, in collaboration with others, to generate discoveries and knowledge with wide impact and outreach.

One of our Strategic Areas is a unique grouping of analytical and computational science teams delivering, managing and analysing high precision, high content and high throughput data from agricultural science experiments. The research we undertake is often interdisciplinary and creates (or validates) new analytical approaches, new analysis methods, new software and new resources for direct application to Rothamsted’s science portfolios and more widely to research in agricultural systems. We also make numerous data, software tools and other information widely available to the global scientific community and other stakeholders or beneficiaries of our work.

Rothamsted Research is primarily funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Science Research Council (BBSRC), and also receives funding from other government bodies, levy Boards charities and industry.

Statistics for Sustainable Development

Statistics for Sustainable Development logo

Statistics for Sustainable Development (Stats4SD) is a not-for-profit, social enterprise established in May 2016. We promote better use of statistical methods for decision-making to benefit society and the environment. To achieve this, we advise on:

  • The use of statistical tools in the real world
  • Data engineering, analysis and associated information technology
  • Effective and efficient use of research methods
  • Generation of information products derived from data in the form of resources
  • Statistical support for monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of development interventions

We work with partners throughout the world, supporting sustainable development processes. Much of our work takes place in developing countries, however, our areas of work are not determined by geography but by the contribution we can make. We charge for these services to cover our costs, but we do not make a profit. Any surpluses from our operations are invested in promoting better use of statistics, capacity building and annual donations to local and international charities
