For July’s roundtable, we heard from some NABES members about what they have been working on in 2026 and what is coming up for them in the rest of the year. Work is ongoing to prepare for the release of official annual statistics on waste and natural capital assets in Scotland. There is also a push to improve how soil carbon emissions are estimated in agriculture and forestry by providing standard models, minimum expectations of soil carbon models and emphasising the importance of direct measurements in addition to modelling. Other members have been looking at animal abundance monitoring approaches, for example how to combine data sources such as from structured surveys and citizen science data or assessed the suitability of different survey methods for assessing deer populations across Scottish landscapes.

Upcoming conferences that NABES members will be attending includes the Royal Geographical Society’s Annual International Conference in September and the British Ecological Society’s Annual Meeting in December.
