December 2025 Workshop Summary: Art and Data
The December NABES workshop explored creative, tactile and artistic ways of representing data and statistical ideas. Megan Towers introduced the motivation for combining science and art, including communication, engagement, therapy, creativity and new ways of understanding data. We looked at the community “Knitting the Air” project on air quality in Poplar, London led by Caroline Murray. Fiona Underwood shared weather-based textile projects, and Megan discussed knitted climate and biodiversity stripes.

Nick Schurch presented examples linking art, genomics and academic culture. We also watched and discussed Natalie Miebach’s TED talk describing data sculptures and music. The workshop ended by considering the boundary between art and visualisation, and potential for future NABES arts and crafts activities.
